ALN
Supporting Every Learner at Trealaw Primary School
At Trealaw Primary School, we are committed to supporting the needs of all our pupils. We follow the definition of Additional Learning Needs (ALN) as outlined in the Additional Learning Needs Code for Wales 2021.
A child is considered to have ALN if they have a learning difficulty or disability — whether due to a medical condition or other reason — that requires additional learning support beyond what is typically provided in school.
This may include children who:
-

Find learning significantly more challenging than others of the same age
 -

Have a disability that makes it harder to access the school environment or curriculum in the same way as their peers

It’s important to note that children are not considered to have ALN simply because they speak a different language at home than the one used in school.

What Is Universal Provision?
Most children at Trealaw will not have ALN and will thrive with the high-quality teaching and support we offer to all pupils. This is known as universal provision, and it includes:
-

Whole-class teaching that meets a wide range of needs
 -

Differentiated learning activities
 -

Small group and guided work
 -

Targeted interventions
 -

Reasonable adjustments to ensure access for children with disabilities
One Page Profiles & Target Setting
Every child will have the opportunity to create a One Page Profile, which helps us understand their strengths, interests, and support needs. These profiles are developed in partnership with parents and carers.
Children who take part in universal interventions will have individual targets to work towards. These are regularly reviewed by staff to ensure progress and provide the right support.
