A New Curriculum for a Changing World

At Trealaw Primary School, we’re excited to be part of a national change in education that puts your child’s future at the heart of learning.

The Welsh curriculum is designed for children and young people aged 3 to 16, with a stronger focus on real-life skills, creativity, and wellbeing. It aims to help every child become:

  • Ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout life

  • Enterprising, creative contributors who can thrive in work and play

  • Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the wider world

  • Healthy, confident individuals who lead fulfilling lives

    What’s Changing?

  • Learning for Life: Children will build skills they can use in everyday life — from problem-solving and teamwork to adapting in a fast-changing world.

  • Digital Confidence: A new Digital Competence Framework helps pupils safely and confidently navigate the online world, including topics like cyberbullying, online safety, and digital creativity.

  • Teacher Freedom: Teachers will have more flexibility to tailor lessons to their pupils’ needs, interests, and strengths.

  • Assessment for Growth: Children will be supported to understand how they’re doing and what they need to do next — with a focus on progress, not just test results.

    Why It Matters

The world has changed dramatically since the last curriculum was introduced smartphones, tablets, and global connectivity have transformed how we live and learn. This new approach helps prepare children for the future by making learning more hands-on, relevant, and engaging.

The curriculum is based on the Successful Futures review by Professor Graham Donaldson, which shaped a curriculum fit for the 21st century.
